This reminds me of the urban legand about the airline baggage handlers and the dead dog (also told as the one about the auto mechanic and the dead dog).

If I may comment. There are a few reasons as I see this as wrong. First you would be wasting the retailers time with your stunt. In essence it is like stealing. The hometown retailer provided you with a good that you were able to wear on a specific date. You used the goods at the interview and therefore the retailer should profit.

Also, think of what type of character you have? That is more important than what type of shoes you think you need.

You're vigorously defending this now, which leads me to believe that you'd already made up your mind to do it and were hoping that the forumites would support your decision and put your mind at ease... if so this is not an honest question.

well I admit for self-interest I am biased, but I wouldn't have posted if I did have my mind made up. I just wanted more explanation to responses then "douchey" or "100% douche". As in reasoned arguments why this might be considered unethical in your opinion. Sorry if I've crossed some kind of line.

I may be able to pay less for something by ordering it from God knows where on the internets. Sometimes this is exactly what I do.

Sometimes I pay more than the lowest internet price to buy something in a local store. Why?

The local store lets me examine the item before buying it. And if I do want it, it lets me walk out of the store with it TODAY. The opportunity to do these things is worth something to me, so I am okay with paying more than the internet price.

If no one ever pays the local price, the local store goes out of business, and everyone loses these opportunities. See "the Tragedy of the Commons".
