Why are people posting The Killers in this category? They write (on their debut album, at least) catchy, generic guitar-pop tunes--nothing remotely innovative.

If you wanted to get into something similar that actually has some substance, you could at least complain that you don't like early Weezer.

Sorry, it's Arcade Fire isn't it? There's an Arcadia neighborhood here in Phoenix.

I was trying to name bands that would apparently make me hip if I actually listened to them

The Fall and Pavement are really quite dissimilar to me. The solo stuff from Malkmus I've passed on as well.

I think you need to be in the right mood to listen to stuff like WhiteHouse/Throbbing Gristle/Flipper/Einstrurzende Neubaten(sp?)/MBV/Merzbow/Boards of Canada(mellow)/Jesu/Boredoms/Boris/Sunn O))) , etc.
If you want to like stuff like Boredowms, etc try LIghtning Bolt. Some of the noise stuff is a little one dimensional, but LB is a little more accessible.

As far as Yo La Tengo, Solo Malkmus stuff and Silver Jews - I'll have to agree with ya - like a few songs, but they get little play. Although I'd rather hear that, than say, My Chemical Romance - bleh.

Wow, really? I don't understand how anyone can like Pavement and not the Jicks, unless he just happened to be a Spiral Stairs kinda guy.

Kanye's production has always been the cornerstone of his music. His rapping is underrated - better than most out there, but not superlative.

pretty much anything remotely prog * or kraut

i keep hearing CAN and feel like I should like them, and want to be into them, but some how just can't.

Arcade Fire, New Pornographers, Death Cab, all those bands who can't seem to write decent choruses to go along with their middle school lyrics suck BTW.

I've met a few rabid fans who claim them to be the absolute ****, guess I haven't found that yet (songs like When in rome, and vival la speed metal are bad ass, but the other albums are not as up my alley)
