All the critics say I'm supposed to like Bruce Springsteen, but - - - -

^ but it takes an effort. It is worth it though. Have you tried Nebraska? That is hard not to like. I get put off when I hear "rock and roll sax" and thankfully there is none of it on that record, just lo-fi home-recorded goodness.

REM
U2
(I know they have made some great music but I can never get myself to buy it)
On the newer front I agree on Neutral Milk Hotel

^ I just got over an EPIC aversion to U2 by listening to WAR which is an amazing amazing amazing record. It is what a band should sound like, and must have been a breath of fresh air in the synth-heavy environment that was early 1980s top 40. Do yourself a favor and purchase it now. early REM is great, too. The trajectory is kinda the same as U2's really. Fables of Reconstruction is a top-notch album, and it sounds like it was played BY A REAL BAND, instead of some flimsy studio-construction. It is produced by Joe Boyd-----you can live on a steady diet of albums produced by that man without suffering from rickets.
