That response (which basically says, "I am very clear, except when I'm not.") is an amazing verbal sleight of hand.

Not really. I made clear the rare instances when I am not always clear. And I made clear that those instances are always in the CE forum. I will now be more clear and make clear that they are almost always in threads that have to do with philosophy or theology.

I find this hard to parse... verbal, yet hand... Is it a metaphor, or a metonym?

Now, where is the money today--in ascots, pocket squares, spectator shoes, that sort of stuff, or in T-shirts, hoodies, blue jeans, sneakers and garb of that ilk? If Ask Andy can attract more participants interested in the latter kind of apparel and with the advertising to follow, it could be a friggin' gold mine.

I really hate to think ill of Andy, of whom I am personally very fond and think of as one of the world's genuine nice guys, but this thought has crossed my mind previously. And, frankly, if sacrificing the Ken Pollocks and the Jan Libourels to the Cruisers and Gabba Gouls is going to bring in tens of thousands of dollars in increased ad revenue to the site, I honestly don't know if I would have acted differently under the same circumstances.

Sorry, Andy, if I am traducing you unjustly, but it has been the most plausible hypothesis that has presented itself to me.

With all due respect Jan, I think that this hypothesis is flawed. Ask Andy is a forum that was founded for the discussion of tailored clothes and no amount of cruisers or gabba gouls will ever make it into an attractive website for streetwear advertisers. Organizations cannot change their DNA in such a fundamental way.

I believe many of you are imputing too much intent to an evolutionary process that is in many ways haphazard and random. It's been obvious for some time now that Andy is no longer steering the ship like he used to and it seems to have simply drifted off in a different direction.

That's the answer to why someone with no interest in clothing spends so much time on a clothing forum - because he has tasted power. He smells blood and wants to see how much more destruction he can wreak.

I think the interesting point is that the troll was not only tolerated by the moderators, but he was actually cosseted by Kabbaz when a few weeks later he expunged the terms "slob" and "slobwear" from Andyland. I think Cruiser may have gotten kid glove treatment because he is an avowed Republican (right-wingers seem to fare much better in Andyland than outspoken liberals and leftists) and he claims to have been a Vietnam veteran. Veterans are held in much greater veneration in contemporary America than in my younger days, probably because almost every male more than a few years older than myself was himself a veteran either of Korea, World War II or World War I. We even had a veteran of the Spanish American war living up the street from us.

Kabbaz takes military service very seriously when choosing favorites and moderation techniques.

He is a Republican? I did not know that. My impression would have been left-of-center. Live and learn, I guess...

If true, then that is too bad. I always thought a moderator, being in a position of responsibility, should be...moderate...

I hope this was done to neutralize what they felt had become a divisive issue rather than to play favorites.

You know, I don't think so. Those are terms that Cruiser takes extreme exception to, and for whatever reason he has become a favorite son over there. As I recall, it was a particularly petulant fit by Cruiser that was behind the banning of those terms.

If I remember my own experiences, the mindset was more reminiscent of a red counter revolution with imagined crimes and forced apologies or confessions.
