it's not as though it was the movie that was inspirational; more like mila jovovic riding around on a motorcycle in a trench + garters slaying zombies. Also some dude with a tank top and a scarf.

Why? My personal tastes and body fluctuate so wildly... one week I want to wear something slouchy, the next something skinny... one summer I put on 10 pounds from eating/working out, the next winter I'm eating ramen all day and not sleeping, cramming for finals and drop 10 pounds.
Some of the stuff I've bought (H&M, onsale at Urban/Zara) have survived through the years through a little groundbreaking process called not washing.
So yeah, aside from a few items where I find value in buying something expensive (stuff I wear all the time). Cheap **** it is for me.

Zara and H&M and the like have their place and you can find diamonds in the rough, but mostly it's a waste of time. Almost everything I bought at H&M last year I don't want anymore. Dirt-cheap stuff brings out the impulsive marsupial in everyone.

True. Every time I walk through there I see atleast maybe 1-2 things I feel like buying... Conversely, scouring through Ebay/FS:SWD, 99% of the stuff is trash and a bigger waste of time.

sounds like you're not quite 100% on what you want your look to be, still experimenting, etc. that combined with a budget, i think fast fashion places like h&m and zara are just fine, seeing as you're probably not gonna wear a piece for more than a year (except probably for basic things like nice jeans, etc)
