I brought this 27" inch leather knob umbrella from Leung So Kee (a most famous umbrella manufacturer and retailer in Hong Kong and South China (since 1885)) for about $50.

No James Smith class, but the brand umbrella is considered to be very durable, bear a life-time warranty for bone repair and very expensive compared to other average umbrella.

I just don't like the feeling of leaving a nice/expensive umbrella in a bin at the front of the restaurant along with a ton of other cheap umbrellas. Intentionally or accidentally, someone could easily take the wrong one home. And if you take it with you to your table because it's so precious to you, you will look like a doob (rightfully so).

Still, I like the full length type, I buy a wooden curve handle model at Target, it's about $10. The only thing I dont like about it is that the end cap is not very durable. But no one else sees that.

I bought three Brigg umbrellas about fifteen years ago and have been using them without problem ever since. Each is wood with a black silk canopy.

We keep one in the trunk of each car and a travel version in my suitcase.

There's no greater luxury than a well-made full-length umbrella, either with a wooden handle or stick-through. Always a black canopy, for me.

You can find some surprisingly nice umbrellas on eBay, with some hunting. Briggs command a premium, but sometimes defunct makers show up and go for very little. I just bought a solid stick, made in England model for $34 shipped.

Also, from an aesthetic standpoint, a good umbrella really accents fine clothes, while a cheapie plastic model just brings things down.

I agree with the Brigg fans. I had the pleasure of visiting the store, which is very cool from top to bottom. I liked it so much, i bought an umbrella in the 'size' for my height with a solid wood shaft, and a tweed jacket from downstairs.

I plan to keep the umbrella in the back seat or trunk of the car, for rainy days at the office or when going to a restaurant, and see no problem curling it and placing it in an empty seat or under the table while dining.

My grandfather owned a rickshaw and "driver;" however, I don't know if he used a parasol.
