Also, as Greg points out, swatches aren't all that helpful for discerning how two similar cloths will actually look different in practice. Even having entire rolls of cloth in front of you doesn't eliminate the guess factor. So, once I narrow down my conceptual choice to something like "mid-grey flannel," I just do research on who makes the best flannel and pick their mid-grey. Any minute differences I might notice in nap or mottling or shade could easily shift under different lighting conditions and over the life of the garment.
