As far as I know, BB does not have free alterations. I paid about $40 to hem my pants and shorten the sleeves.
I've had free alterations done at the BBBF on Fillmore but it seems they were reluctant to offer the service on sale items
Then the store ripped you off.
In my experience, BB brick and mortar stores shorten sleeves and hems pants for free (purchased online or in-store). This applies to blazers, sport coats, suits and dress slacks.
+1 agreed, I've had really bad experience with most of the SA's with the exception of one. I have the same philosophy that when they ask you for help they aren't really asking and then they make it seem like they are doing you a favor by allowing you to purchase their clothing. It's partially b/c all their SA's are so dry...I've had free alterations done at the BBBF on Fillmore but it seems they were reluctant to offer the service on sale items
That's only because their staff are generally douchebags. I've been to the Madison Ave store and several in NJ. They're all the same. Ask them to help you do anything but purchase an item (that gives them a commission) and they act they like you're cutting onions under their noses.

Merry Christmas SF! (December 26 - January 4)
- All Ties- 40% off
I built relationships with both a RL SA and a BB. When I need to purchase or locate something I go through them. When I need to return something I go through them. It is like having a favorite bartender, you take care or each other.
Case in point, I had a pair of cordovan boots that I mistakenly followed the reviewers advice and ordered half a size too small. After wearing them for a couple of days I realized that I indeed needed half a size bigger and I exchanged them yesterday without a bat of an eye.
