What's your experience visiting NYC department stores and boutique stores

I like to ask a question for everybody who been to NYC. What's your experiences of visiting high-end department stores like Barney's, Bergdorf Goodman Mens, Bloomingdale's, Saks Fifth Avenue (which some has MTM departments), moderate priced department stores like H&M and Macy's, and boutique stores like Brooks Brothers, J. Press, Paul Stuart, and Turnbull & Asser? Was it a good or bad experience to those shops in NYC?

I hadn't been to NYC in ages but have been a couple of times in the last few months with work. The first time I trolled round just about all those you mentioned (there are several threads on suggestions of where to shop) and while a lot of them are OK for a bit snoop around (you forgot to mention the Lauren Mansion too!) unless you catch them during a sale you are gonna pay retail prices for what you see, and one thing I've learned from SF is to view paying retail as a last resort.

I was back again a couple of weeks ago and had much more fun in SoHo where there seems to be more one-off shops which I found are much more interesting than the midtown-uptown retail chains, a lot of which are just swankier versions of shops in my local mall.

The exception to his was the Tyrwhitt shops. The one in Times Square is the biggest. I like their shirts but there were a couple of items I wanted to see for myself before taking the plunge rather than trusting the online site. I also like Uniqlo (there's one in midtown and one downtown) for their socks, most of their other stuff I find to be very disappointing in quality.

I've had consistently positive experiences, that's why I keep going back.

I've been into a couple of NYC department stores about 10 years ago, think it was Saks and Macys. Was impressed with the presentation and the staff seemed very courteous. High end prices though.

yeah, the dept stores in NYC have everything and are much bigger than the ones in the usual 'burbs. I would start in SoHo. It's a good shopping experience and vibe. Have fun!
