Bought a small bottle of The Glenlivet last night, moving on to single malt from bourbon.

I find bourbon has a much 'darker' taste, more woody and burnt compared to this scotch, which has a lighter more 'fruity' feel to it.

Tried it first neat. Then after with a tiny splash of water. I'm not sure if its just placebo, but what a difference! With the water it became much 'sweeter' than the first tasting.

I'm of the personal opinion that the idea that fine whiskey should only be had neat is mostly misguided booze snobbery. Certainly if you prefer it that way, good for you, but water and in the same vein a little ice softens the concentrated alcohol bite and often opens up the flavor to allow your taste buds to get past the alcohol. Perhaps this is a prevalent opinion, I don't know a lot of bourbon/scotch connoisseurs but I still see from time to time people appalled of adding water or ice to single malt and it seems ridiculous to me.

Its 3:35 PM and I'm drinking an old fashioned with knob. I finally found the right balance of ingredients. Next up will probably be a G&T with Sapphire but it seems like a strange drink to progress to. Maybe instead I'll just have some Talisker 10 yr.

True -- an Old Fashioned is a sensitive drink.

Nothing to write home about, but available, relatively cheap and tasty enough to compliment the sugar and lime.

I don't usually use Cachaça Artesanal in caipirinhas - regular shelf stuff works just fine.
