Dear SF,

I am considering getting an odd vest. I plan to wear it with dress
shirts and chinos mainly. I know many think that a vest should never be worn without a jacket, but look at the model in the link below from suitsupply :
http://eu.suitsupply.com/sv/waistcoats/bla-vast/W170104.html?cgid=Waistcoats

I think that looks great. Is it easier to pull of the odd vest look if the vest has a bold pattern?

Also what are your thoughts on DB odd vests such as this one?
http://eu.suitsupply.com/sv/waistcoats/brun-vast/W170103.html?cgid=Waistcoats

I work in an office with a Relaxed/non existing dress code but still want to look dapper.

Sorry if I am being a bit woolly but let me know your thoughts :)

Try a vest with braces. Match a pattern top with solid bottoms. Shoes will play a key role in dressing down the outfit if needed.

A db vest will look fahion forward. If you have the confidence to wear it proudly then go for it. My personal taste would go away from db vests mainly because I don't like db jackets.

If I may, this may be the classic situation of "what you think you will look like" and "what you will actually look like," i.e.:

The model in the SuSu ad is just that - a model. The vest-sans-jacket look - in my most humble of opinions - will likely come across as gimmicky. Personally, I think it is a silly look. But then again, I do not really care for vests under any circumstance, let alone an odd vest without a jacket.

In any event, if you want to scratch the itch, go for it. Worst comes to worst you have to pay for shipping and returns. Just make sure to post pictures . In any event, the line between looking like the SuSu model and that gent on the far right in the fedora picture is thin. And personally, I do not think there is much that I can do to help you stay on the "right" side of that line. The CM-side of me says to stick with something simple and traditional - but really, this kind of look does not fit within my wheelhouse and maybe it is better wearing something with a pattern (as it will not be combined with a jacket).

Apropos of nothing I did find this neato.

+1

Don't do it unless you are also a model and your chinos are also tailored like the SS model. Chinos can so easily ruin an outfit when they are not fit correctly.

Even if they are, don't do it.

I frequently wear vests with chinos. I press a crease into the chinos so they look dressier. My preference is for a vest with a full lapel, tweed, or madras in warmer weather. I don't wear my clothes as tight as the SuSu model--I draw the line a bit closer to comfort over style. As with anything, wearing it with confidence is the key.

I rather like it, but as stated above, for someone who resembles the model in build.

If you don't, I'm not too sure how well it would work.

I should qualify my comment. I don't look like the model, but I do wear a size 38 suit, so I'm reasonably trim. But I'm also 60, so I wear what I want :).

Do you wear bracers with your chinos or belts, or are they snug enough for no extra support needed?
I heard that belt + vest is a faux pas.

Still not sure whether to get one, the vest seems to be a real opinion divider :)

I usually wear braces since I prefer my pants a tad loose at the waist. I also use shirt stays. The claim that belts are not worn with a vest is only that the buckle can make the vest stick out. But if you don't fasten the bottom button that doesn't usually matter. My suggestion is to pick one up on Ebay and try it out.
