I agree, and think Reggs' example of Half-Life 2 is perfect (not to scoff at the design). It's a dystopian nightmare on par with Gilliam's Brazil. I just chose the examples I did because I thought they were most apparent without providing a rundown. Another great example is BioShock, which is Warren Spector's response to objectivism, and a game I can't get my mind off in the weeks following its completion.

On the topic of game music: I'm going to school for electronic music composition specializing in scoring, and my most-used tool is a sid synth, which is based on the chip that powered the Commodore 64. Music in games has definitely has a profound impact on me thanks to the likes of Yuzo Koshiro and Jun Fukuda.

I don't want to jinx it but The Last Guardian will probably be the best game of all time.

This is one of my all-time favorites. Sure it is dated now, but the actual theme, story telling, and music all play out well.
