Novice question....
A few jackets I have been interested in lately are uncanvassed. What do people think of these? Do the lapels hold shape at all or do they just go limp and look shabby after a few wears? I have zero experience with this type of jacket, but would like to hear what others have learned about them.
A few examples I was interested in:
Ledbury:

Epaulet (sold out now) LBM:
http://epauletnewyork.com/products/epaulet-x-luigi-bianchi-montova-navy-pique-sportcoat

Are these what people refer to shirt jackets? If not, how are the different?

Thanks!

Generally this would be called a "deconstructed" jacket. They're best reserved for casual wear because they do look softer and wrinkle more. Ideally pair them with a shirt with a soft collar and jeans or chinos. I have a few from Luxire that I like.

Usually when people talk about shirt jackets they mean something with a shirt collar. It looks like a shirt, but is looser, has more pockets, and is made of a heavier fabric than a regular shirt.

Thank you for the information! That really clears things up.
Follow up question. How do you maintain a nice lapel roll if there is not canvas in there?

Avoid dry cleaning. They tend to hard press jackets, which flattens the roll.

Hang it up in a steamy room to steam out any odours from wearing whilst sweaty (!) then press the main body (under a wet cloth) but avoid pressing the lapels.

If you can, get a good tailor to steam and press for cleaning.

Agree with the above. Great for casual wear, but you'll look unfinished if you're wearing this to a meeting with your boss.
