Dimples. It's really the only good look for a tie.

Kind of off topic, but I'm wondering, what in the hell can I do with my black tie that doesn't match any of my other blacks? I bought this back when I was thinking all black is the same. I can't really find anything it goes with. The idea was to wear it with my black suit for funerals.

N/M I'm just being obsessive...the mismatch isn't that noticeable

Wear it with lighter shade shirts (lighter blue, pink...) and light-to-medium grey or navy coats/suits (medium grey will look better than a dark charcoal).

Check out Andrew H's auctions on eBay - he always seems to show his coats and suits with a black tie... Here are a couple ox examples:

I always dimple, though I'm not really a fan of the full Windsor. If anything I'll do a half Windsor, but my preference lies with the four in hand. Imperfect beauty is the best way to say why I like it the most.

There is no way to tie a tight knot that does not dimple.

Limp knots are for limps.

Center dimple is the better way to do it.

Thanks gdl, I never considered a lighter colored coat. Everything I have is dark. Perhaps I should consider that instead of getting an olive colored one.

Although I'm certain that none of our SF brethren might need such a device, I am just as certain that 'others' might benefit from this personal assistant.

Dimple. Always. Everyday. Symmetrical.

I don't like the asymmetric look. I've been practicing tying tie knots for 10+ years and I can claim myself to be quite proficient at it. I like the way Prince Charles tie his tie knots to real tight and match them with semi-spread collars. Very Nice indeed.

Please tell that to your neice when she gives one to you for your birthday!

Better yet, unwrap the gift and smile when you thank her. Then keep it in a dresser drawer for many years in case she inquires about its practicality.

I don't know FC, we've never seen any of your tie knots. Maybe your niece had good cause to introduce you to the Dimpler.

As for teh dimples, I like them but they always come out, well off! At least that way I am in no danger of becoming a "lacquered monkey "
