I admit I haven't finished the thread yet, and feel free to clobber me if this has been covered, but what about terminology, like "Repp", "Foulard", etc... Can someone point me toward a discussion that covers this stuff?

How about Land's End?

The one and only tie I ever purchased from Lands' End was promptly returned. It was paper thin, would not hold a dimple, and the knot wouldn't stay tight. Of course, that's not to say that this is characteristic of all their ties, but I doubt I'll ever give them a second chance.

This should tell you pretty much everything you need to know about ties: http://putthison.com/tagged/The-Necktie-Series

Their knits are good, especially since you can regularly get one for 30-40% off.

I want the Prince of Wales/plaid tie.

I am interested in folks' views on these two.

The first is the Sam Hober worn by PPanther.

The second and third are by Drake's and navy blue/white which is a bit different. I like them both but lean towards Hober as it will be my size and is a bit more traditional in color, i think.

But would one conclude both are beautiful and deserve to be in a core set of ties, but probably not both unless you have many ties?

Gents, Another question if I may: I saw some Tom Ford ties for sale on Ebay. What do you think of this pattern/colors? Here are a couple. And the link http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-TomFord-100-Silk-Geometric-Design-Silver-color-Tie-/151163923231?pt=US_Mens_Ties&hash=item2332126b1f

Ennius, are you trolling? Are you not capable of making some decisions on your own? Seriously, pp, archibald, I, and many others have been very helpful to you in this thread, but it's time to take off the training wheels. These aren't life or death situations we're talking about here. If you're just looking to build a basic tie wardrobe of 5-8 or so, this thread should already contain more than enough information to assist you with that. As a bonus, we also made you aware of the Hober Appreciation Thread. Don't base your selections solely on what others say; make up your own mind and don't overthink things. That said, I'll go ahead and address your inquiry about the glen plaid ties: black and white is the traditional color scheme for this pattern and it's what I would opt for in such a tie. The Drake's navy/white version is nice as well, but for all intents and purposes, it's the same tie as the Hober. If you have 100+ ties, I could see going for both. If not, I'd opt for the Hober since a) it's the traditional colors, b) you can get it in your exact dimensions and construction preferences, and c) it's probably 2/3 the cost of the Drake's tie.

I just noticed odd thing about a tie, in place about 1/4 of the length of a tie there's a sheet sewn in(plastic?), that gives a weird sound when touched similar to that of a plastic bag. I'm have minimal exp with ties and I find it kinda odd. It was thrifted but It's not a cheap tie and all other signs indicate medium/good quality. Any clue what it is?

The thing is it makes no sense, it's just a tiny sheet roughly 2 by 1.5 inch. Besides that tie looks like a legit ferragamo. Assuming it's a good quality fake, it still makes no apparent sense to me to leave some plastic bag or w/e inside a tie. I think sooner or later I will just destroy the tie to find out what's inside because this mistery has to be solved no matter the cost.

That is a god awful ugly tie... I say destroy it for that reason alone!

Also, are you sure it's not some type of hidden pocket? I've seen ties with those before. Pretty tacky and gimmicky if you ask me, but they do indeed exist.
