Yeah, that's a weird one.

In the "things that could happen" basket:

There's an episode of the BBC series Spooks - called MI-5 in the US - with a fantastic sense of fear and dread to it. In the episode, all signs point to a germ-warfare attack upon London, but the characters are trapped inside their headquarters, cut off from communications and with no way of safely getting outside.

It gets very tense, and the ramifications of such an attack are much scarier than a little possessed girl or a portal to hell in space.

If you think Salad Fingers is messed up, you should see David Firth's other stuff.

I was going to post links to some of it, but it's so unpleasant, I thought I'd better not tarnish the board; leave it to Google. The Xmas 2006 special, the Valentine's Special and "Milkman" are particularly disturbed/disturbing.

happy to see other firth fans here.

i saw ET 2 in the philippines in 1984-85; that was fucked up. ET had a trunk like an elephant and he killed sexy campers.

I am surprised that no one mentioned the original Halloween. It may not be the scariest ever, but it has to be included in the conversation.

The original (1955) Diabolique with Simone Signoret is pretty scary.

I never saw the 1996 re-make, but it's hard to imagine it being more tense than the original.

My vote goes to The Ring just because I saw it at the theatres as a youngin. The atomsphere at theatre was awesome during the last bits of sequences.

Not the scariest movie, but I thought Insidious was one of the better horror movies as of late. Creepy atmosphere, especially when he astral projects. Kind of like experiencing a haunted house.

How about Dana Delany in a leather corset? It must balance it out, no? I think it swings it to the + side.
