side zip looks interesting- is that piece of leather folded over and secured with the buttons?

yeah the leather is folded over and secured, but the buttons are non-functional. They have more traditional sidezip and backzip boots, i wanted something a bit unique.

I don't actually mind paying taxes though. If i'm going to be buying what most people consider to be expensive shoes then i shouldn't be avoiding paying the tax on them.

The toe shape on these is ugly, the zipper construction looks terrible, and the creasing on the leather doesn't look good

Nicely, what kind of leather is that? it looks like pig's hide which i'm not fond of. color looks great!
