Guys I've listed a pair of Brown shell cordovan tassels from BB in the men's clothing classifieds thread.
My first thought is that they are some kind of special make-up, but another user mentioned they might be light soaked from being on the floor of BB and thus the brown shade.
I'm not sure considering the brown is not just on the vamp but encompasses the whole shoe.

as I've said in the other thread, I have seen similar/identical pairs on display at BB in Boston. fluorescent lights can really lighten shell.

see also, for example, all of these which started out the same shade of brown, but some have been displayed for a while. pic courtesy of namor

Can anyone else with Chamois Longwing Blucher's from Leffot comment on how these fit? Considering sizing down to 8D from 9D since that's the only size left and I've heard these fit abit large (for Barrie).

Allen Edmonds brushes do the job for me. Cheap and higher quality than I've seen around town.

The most mellow looking Aldens I've ever seen were on display at BB in San Francisco. I'd say the light effect is far more likely than some special make up.

Great video, Namor

seeing that reminds me,
can anyone recommend a good (and not crazy expensive) source for large horsehair brushes?

Cleaned up the boots. Excuse the camera angle. Even made me dizzy watching it.

I use the same microfiber towels. They work great. It really made the difference between a good shine and a true mirror shine.

To double confirm: I also emailed Orvis customer service, and this was the response: "The Alden Cordovan Shoe (item 5C45) is crafted on the Tremont last. This is similar to the Barrie last. I hope this information is helpful. "

Thanks for that. Now we'll see if I can tell the difference.
Dunno guys, that picture looks like the Barrie all day long to me :stirpot: Some of the online retailers aren't the most accurate in their Alden descriptions. The Tremont has a more angular/plunging toe in profile, while this is more bulbous looking. Plus, I've never seen a longwing on the Tremont (which would actually be a nice shoe). On the bright side, the Tremont and Barrie are fairly similar fit-wise.
I suppose it won't be surprising if you are right. Orvis CS isn't likely to be the best informed source on Alden lasts, and they are certainly answering these questions by rote. So perhaps the model number on the inside of the shoe will tell all. If it says 975, then we'll know.

The mystery may be solved - my Orvis #8 longwings came today. The model number is 975 and they look and fit like the Barrie.

It all depends on what shoe you're getting a 9D measurement from. If it's a pair of sneakers, it might work. Compared to other Alden lasts, Barrie is really only about .5 a size big. You'd be taking a gamble sizing down from 9D.

You should notify Orvis that they are giving out incorrect information.
