The Duluth is also pretty cool and they can do some customization-- colour of leather straps, wool lining, etc.

depends on what you mean by stylish i guess.

i really like the archival clothing rucksacks - built to last, in the USA, by a small shop.

I've had Archival Clothing's Rucksack for a couple of weeks and it's even better than I thought it would be - clean shape, thoughtful design, very comfortable and, yes, it gets me to and from work in style. One thing that annoys me about backpacks is their propensity to fall away from your back. The Archival Clothing Rucksack hugs close - fits really well. They discuss how their design accomplished this in the link MichaelPemulis posted (above), and in this blog entry, where they discuss design problems they were trying to avoid: http://www.archivalclothing.com/2010...-round-up.html

I was a little apprehensive about switching from a more traditional over the shoulder computer-type carry bag so I opted for the all black verson. But, having used the bag for a while, I think any of the other colors (olive, gray, tan) could work for a work bag. And it's made in Springfield, Oregon, USA.

    The AC store: http://store.archivalclothing.com/products/rucksack
If you are interested in this bag but aren't 100% sure, you might contact them to see if a retailer in your area carries them (I know a couple of stores in Portland, OR & NYC carry them - not sure about other locales).

Buying it from South Willard/Altadena will still be the cheapest way, even with shipping.

If you like the mountaineering style, you can look at Rivendell Mountain Works, great packs made by a wizard in the Northwestern mountains. Look for the Lupine model, much cheaper than the Altadena and extremely well made.

I've got a Visconti that I've had for years and the more it gets beaten up, the better it looks: [IMG]
The backpacks posted thus far are not good [IMG] Allow me to assist. [img[http://www.leatherbag.co.jp/2_basic/database/img/il/minerva135/model_z.jpg[/img [IMG]
Those are beautiful bags, really. When I started attending professional school while working, I needed a bag that could function as well with my suit at work, jeans at class, and everything in between -- and since my commute involves a chunk of walking, I needed a backpack to free my arms and save my neck from my 24lbs of casebooks. I went with a Saddleback, and can't rec them more highly: This bag has been perfect for every need I have -- it converts from a backpack to a messenger, which is great for me, as a backpack is just not professional as it. Never will be. As a messenger, it flies under that radar. http://www.saddlebackleather.com/cat...fcase-Chestnut ~ H
