ok going to get a local guy to make me a couch - anyone want to share pics of couches they love and/or own to give me some ideas?

custom job eh? I'd love to have a more contemporary take on a Barcelona chair in a couch form, with arm rests.

We had one made about 15 years ago by someone who does this for hotels and other places that need really durable furniture. Basic sort of thing-- gently rolled arms, no separate back cushions, plain skirt around the bottom. Upholstered in the sort of blue herringbone that could be made into a topcoat.

Major tip: if you like to lie on sofas to watch baseball (using an arm as a headrest) or take serious naps (lying just on the cushions), make sure it's long enough. Most commercial ones aren't.

I'm very fond of Swedish Neoclassical design from the late 18th century and the Biedermeir style of Austria despite its very bourgeois origins.

Period Biedermeier sofas are quite cheap in the Scandinavian countries - say $2000 - 2500 for a really good one, and down to $500 for a nice one in need of new upholstery. (You might have to add another $1000 for new upholstery, so it's worth watching the condition of that.)
