I'm in high school, so I'd like to think I'm among the youngest on SF--perused for a while, but I finally got the time to join. Anyways, I'm kind of lost on shorts; I never really had a personal style until this year, and I suppose one could label it "prep" or "trad." The one thing I'm lost on, though, are shorts. Colors? Inseams? When is short too short? Thanks for the help in advance.

Slim-fit but not too tight/tapered, end right above the knee. Try not to get carried away with cuffing if you're still young and don't want to awkwardly stand out in HS.

My suggestion on your budget and style? J Crew. Cheap, pretty good quality, perfect youthful fit

haha i'm a big BB fan, but my father feels it's a bit... WASPy for a catholic-jew, so i have to buy it myself. i did pick up the BB x Ray-Ban Wayfarers, though, those're filthy. and i love fratagonia, got like three fleeces and a few sweaters, but i've never really checked out the stand-ups. on j.crew... i love their design philosophy, but i've noticed that their fit is a bit weird on me, and they don't last as long as i'd like

Are you at the beach/pool or younger than 12 or playing some kind of sport/exercise, or performing manual labor? If no then don't wear shorts.

JCrew are great and are on sale right now. Get 9" inseam in any of the many colors they have. I like the Bonobos shorts too; they are a little less baggy and are also 9".

At your age I would consider you being more preppy than traditional. Traditional is something you grow into with age.

As per your questions though.

Colors?
Navy and different shades of khaki are a staple.
If you're going for a preppy look experiment with salmon, yellows, greens and other bright colors.

Fit:
Shorts at your age should break about mid knee.
Repeat after me, I will only buy flat front shorts and trousers at my age. Pleats will land you in a downward spiral of misery.
I'm sure you're aware of it but do wear a belt. It ties the look together.

As for lines to shop, you don't need to spend a ton of money at your age on clothes. You'll grow out of them soon enough anyways. Just make sure the fit is good and you'll be ahead of 99% of everyone else your age. I suggest trying macy's or bonton's or dillard's whichever is in your area. The RL line has some great colors in it.

Whatever - try living in the tropics.

RL has some great linen/cotton blends.
+1 for Bonobos, seem to be good value too.

Why do you wear suits? They're totally not suited to boxing.

Cut Offs are fine for you - take an old pair of denims and amputate the legs - somewhere above the knee to your choice. No need for hemming.

Won't suit some here but fine for casual wear and certainly fits in.
