Despite the allure of the story, the demand has never been terribly high. Most of New & Lingwood's bespoke customers (when N&L had rights to the hides) and subsequently Cleverley's customers were rather conservative in approach. Most of the shoes that George & John made at both firms were very classic...with black calf being the predominant color. The texture and color (and faint aroma) of the Russian calf made it best suited for a country shoe...for which there was less demad, particularly at a higher price.
