reply to "thanks for coming over"

Am I the only person who hates it when people say this? I don't even really know how to respond to it. I usually respond to it with "thanks for having me." But what else would they do? Turn me away at the door? Another response I use is "I had a lovely time" (or some variant of). However, I find this also as kind of obvious, like the last response. I wouldn't have stayed if I didn't enjoy myself. What's actually a good response that doesn't state the obvious?

What's wrong with stating the obvious? If you mean what you're saying, great. If you don't, then lie. It won't really be the time or place to do otherwise. It's not really a different take on this, but I usually get specific about what I enjoyed (the conversation, food, drink, bathroom magazine selection, etc.), even if it was the one single thing that didn't displease me about the event.

A lot of socialy niceties are stating the obvious. If you're going to look for substantial, insightful meaning from every bit of dialogue you're going to dissapointed often. Your current responses are appropriate and recipricate the intent of your hosts, so I would continue to use them lest you reveal yourself as awkward at this particular exchange as you apparently are.

I'm sorry but I really can't ever recall being upset that someone told me they enjoyed my company, or "thanks for coming over."
