Recommendations for NYE in Paris?

Hello all.

I'm going to be spending my New Year's Eve in Paris with a group of friends, and we're thoroughly confused about where to go and what to do on the night. From what we hear, Paris is not the nicest place to simply be wandering the streets, and there is not much in the way of fireworks or other entertainment.

My question, then, is if you have any recommendations for restaurants, bars, clubs, etc., and if you agree with our assessment that being on the streets is not the best idea.

To give some more information, we're all late 20's (well, as the oldest of the bunch, I'm 30), all from Melbourne or Sydney, and are either students, recent graduates, or juniors in the creative industries. Ergo, we're not made of money! We do have an apartment we've booked in the Marais, and have the fall-back option of just having a dinner party there, but we really want to get amongst the action, if there is any.

I'd appreciate any tips you may have. Even tips unrelated to NYE. Thanks chaps!
