Even better, we're about to get socked with a 9% fare hike for a period in which the inflation rate was 2%.

Value for money!

any escalators associated with the E line seem to run on a 50% of the time schedule

Slightly off topic, but I have a huge jar of change I need to cash, and I've heard some banks don't take them (Chase specifically). I don't want to get on a subway with 45 pounds of quarters unless I know who will count it. Anybody?

well, it would actually be nice if they didn't block them off and let people use them as stairs but they don't. Insult to injury.

If there's not a union contact stipulation preventing their use as stairs I'll eat a bug.

the last fare hike was exactly two years ago, the CPI says 2% for those 24 months.

BTW, I recall doing the math back then as well the story was similar, a fare hike of about 3-4x the rate of inflation

The food rent and pay wages are fucked up but transit is cheap - u can't take a cab from point a - to point b within the borough for less than $10- if one way was $5 that would still be a bargain -

That's the worst thing, the prices go up, up, up, greater than inflation... And nothing gets any better. :paranoia:

Quit whining. You will someday look back on this as the good old days of public transportation in NYC. In ten years' time, they will be means tested. $15 a ride for the 53% and tourists. Everyone else rides free.

I don't know about NY, but here in LA it's pretty easy to find a supermarket or CVS with a Coinstar machine. If you're willing to take a gift card for Amazon or one of the other participating retailers, or credit spendable in the store where the machine is located, there's no fee. www.coinstar.com/

the odds are if you're in NYC then you're actually carrying around huge containers of coins on the bus/subway/cab so you've got to be sure.
