I'm deciding between a range of textiles for a knit (sweater or cardigan), and I'm just wondering what factors to consider other than softness.

Now, AFAIK, the fiber width (microns) is the end-all-be-all of softness (correct me if I'm wrong).

So cashmere and super/ultrafine merino (~16 microns) would be the softest? However, I've heard claims that alpaca is just as soft as cashmere merino, even if they are in the 20-25u range. Is there something else to softness, or is alpaca desirable for other reasons, but is overall less soft?

Another question pertains to blends. Mohair is a coarse, but still a luxury textile. What is effect of 85/15 mohair blend? Suppose it's blended with merino, would that make the wool less soft?
