I have pairs in calf and patent. About the only time I notice the raised eyebrow of other men is when I'm in a closed environment -- such an elevator on the ride up to the ballroom floor -- with people I don't particularly know. I just do my best to offer in return my version of the infamous overly self-satisfied Dubya (Duhhhhbya?) smirk.

Yes, I realize I'm being a tad rude by that action ...but it's in defense of tradition ... and, moreover, I'm not doing it to the entire country -- or world -- at once.

AlanC ... I love those socks!

A salesman for a local men's shop, knowing I go formal now and again, recommended a grosgrain oxford from Santoni. I don't recall the actual name of this shoe, but it looked similar to this shoe, though the ones he showed me were not bluchers, had a ribbing all throughout running from tip to heal, and were grosgrain on the lacing area as well. I don't know if anyone has seen these, but I really cannot come up with a specific use; do any of you think this is an acceptable substitute for an opera pump? It juust seems more like that middle-ground that no one would need.

I wouldnt mind a sleek oxford lace up in black suede or black grosgrain but that shoe is not advised. I cant picture the one youre speaking of.

Of course I would reserve judgment until i saw them but I am not sure i like stingray for black tie. Now, for an evening/casual shoe even with say a silk jacket or suit, that's BLAM!

I had a boxcalf Paul Sutart/Grenson pair that I liked but that were uncomfortably narrow. I think I sold them on here for a pittance.

I wear Lobb suede evening slippers now (no bows) and black patent plaintoe bals too.

There's some truth to this but as always there's a whatever you want sort of a way and one that both you and others can admire as well done. If i saw the shoes and liked them or liked them with the dinner jacket, then alright but I think they would be distracting, maybe even too matte finished. But for a black suit theyd be very hip and if people do the very minimalist black tie of the black suit with white shirt and black tie, then maybe they would work.

this point i'd agree with, sprt of contempry classic - but they'd need to b e dont without the bone part, more like the sample from G&G's BS gallery
