PGs photo is fine though the combo of brown/grey isn't the optimal choice imho. I think the problem with pp's alden's with those pants is both are the wrong shade to go with the jeans, shoes being way too saturated they look harsh against the grey. If the pants were more charcoalish grey I think it would complement the shoes far better. Funny thing is I have some brick suede color apc boots and they would look horrible with grey but they're extremely versatile with most of pants of all different colors at the same time. Short answer, his pants should be darker or the boots should be lighter.
