For proper fit, are you supposed to unbuckle and rebuckle the strap when putting it on, or should you buy a size which you can just slip on?

If you can slip it on with the buckle latched, it's probably too big.

i can just slip mine on, but i've got elastic attached to the buckle. if i didn't have the elastic, i would have to buckle and unbuckle.

The buckling and unbuckling are such a nuisance that I almost never wear mine (and the two pair I have are great shoes).

More of a nuisance than tying laces?

Chris, I sent you a PM.

imo
I wouldnt consider the buckle more of a nuisance than tying laces.
Initially, you may find the buckle sort of hard to tie on tight getting the leather band through the loop.

but after some experience, it gets to be a bit second nature like lacing.

for all fitted monks, some monks do slip on with shoe horn after they have been broken in.
but some always need to be unbuckled and rebuckled each time. most have the elastic hidden band on the underside to ease the grappling and tension when doing this.
