What lengths officially classify a long tie as "regular" or "standard" vs. "short" vs. "long?" How many inches? Is there actually a consistency among the tie-makers in different nations? There doesn't seem to be that much consistency in other menswear size classifications. Could "regular" be longer in some countries where men tend to be taller? I'm wondering, for example, if Savile Row ties tend to be longer, Italian shorter (I realize this is gross generalization)

You are right that most tie makers don't follow the same length as standard. However, I'm not sure what exactly qualifies something as short or XL.

a quick look @ thetiebar.com shows their measurements:

regular = 58"
XL= 62"

I now try to measure, or have someone else measure, any tie I purchase - a slight nuisance. I'm also finding myself doing double knots more often. Perhaps I've just shrunk that much but I don't think so; am probably fussier. Double knots are big nuisance, too, as I generally have to keep doing it and double knotting isn't so hot for the fabric. The Kilgour tie I got in London gets three knots, now.
