Tons of great songs.
Garcia was one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and he did it all with 9 fingers and being blazed 99% of the time.

Of course their albums suck, they were never intended to be recorded. Listen to a live recording of a show. It's ******* transformative.

As something of an ex-deadhead myself, I can honestly say that I am grateful that the fog eventually cleared. Ya, the Dead have their place in music history, but Garcia was more of a doped out noodler than guitar genius. In fairness, I think the Dead are underrated by people unfamiliar with their work, but seriously overrated by their fans - as Kwilkinson so vociferousy demonstrates.

I saw him in the late 80s twice. Once with Crazyhorse and once just him. He sat on a stool, had a 12 string and a harmonica and that was it. A very mellow concert, but damn, it was good.

I'd say one and a half in a good mood.

When there's a Top 10 or Top 25 Bands of All Time thread and The Clash show up in it, you can tear into them. That's not this thread.

Allowing fans to tape their shows was a stroke of genius. There are still people trading tapes of concerts that occurred 30+ years ago.

kwilk is right: the Dead's albums were basically afterthoughts. The real Dead was a live Dead.

Loved live Dead shows, things haven't been the same since summer '95
