Vintage peacoat question:

I just came across a vintage USN peacoat (I think the label said '66) here in London. It has corduroy-lined pockets, Kersey wool and six buttons (I think). It's sized 38 and it was a perfect fit for me. I usually take a 40R in suits.

The wool's fibers seemed to be slightly 'flat', which I know is a characteristic of Kersey wool. It also seemed to have creases or wrinkles, as though it had been washed improperly in the past. However, this is the first Kersey peacoat I've actually tried on, so I'm not sure if the wool should be that way.

The lining is patched up in places and there are small tears in places.

The price tag is GBP95 (~US150). Bear in mind that USN peacoats are not as abundant as they are in the US, clearly, and that shipping for one of these from the US would probably cost a bomb (maybe USD50?).

With all that said, do you think it's worth the price?

The wool should be soft and not nappy, like the current Melton wool (nappy). I would say it is rather flat. Any creases should come out with a good steaming, or a dry cleaning. The lining I wouldn't worry about as long as it can be repaired (or already has been repaired).

The price, I think, is very good for a peacoat purchased in the Mother country, with the added benefit of no shipping costs.

I tried out this pea coat in a store today.

I only reserved it for now because it's pretty expensive and I'm not quite sure about the size (there were only two sizes - this one is the larger).

Any opinions regarding how it fits me would be appreciated (IS IT TOO SMALL?!).

looks alright to me as far as fit goes, those are giant lapels though and the buttons are really low. doesn't look like a traditional peacoat, but if that is your jam.

No, it's not too small, but it might be a bit short. It should cover all of your butt and not much more. The way you have the top button unbuttoned and the lapel folded over, is not becoming to the coat.

The Jcrew Bayswater was terrible. It is just the best lint collector ever. Even with brushing/lint rolling with every wear, the lint-collecting just gets worse with time. I pitched it after one winter for slight use.

Not that tight. In fact, not tight at all. You need to go up two to three sizes.

If I were in the market for a peacoat, it would definitely be this one (without having tried it on). Not because it's worn by Bond in the upcoming movie, but because it looks nice/fits nice. The details are nice, too.

Is anyone interested in a like-new nice D&G peacoat which retailed for $1100-1200? It's just a little too big for me after I lost a bunch of weight. Size 40R (50R). PM me...I'll probably list it on the classifieds within a couple weeks maybe..

It is exactly this one.. It has a really nice neck contoured attaching flap so you can wear the collar up and keep it closed (most peacoats have one) It actually fits like this on me, but I would prefer a little more slim. I had the sleeves professionally shortened just a little bit (I don't have particularly short arms--the sleeves were just a tad long) and the front buttons moved for a more snug fit.

I managed to pick it up... Luckily no one else had grabbed it first. Turns out its quite a bit older than i thought. It has the one line of stitching at the cuff and two lines of stitching further up the sleeve and the 'naval clothing factory' tag. It was tagged 50s peacoat by the shop. Pics to follow.
