Pauvre Axelle Despiegelaere! I mean, all she did was shoot a gemsbok, a "Least Concern" species with an estimated population of 373,000 in southern Africa. There is also a modest but flourishing population in the Southwest of the USA.

I guess the days when going "on safari" was a romantic, adventurous thing to do are long gone. Quite a few of the stars of "old Hollywood" would go on safari when one really could go on a real safari into the untamed wilds of Africa, not this ranch hunt business.

Back in the 1950s, some businessmen would try to "write off" their safaris, claiming they were for PR purposes, going on safari being seen as something admirable in those days.

The world is certainly changing, and not necessarily for the better. I am glad I shall be making my exit before too many years roll around.

I guess people aren't as outraged, since the killer is a middle aged white guy and not a pretty cheerleader.

Where's jsimonovis413 and his righteous anger when the world needs him?

^Attractive young women who hunt big game do seem to be special magnets for vituperation. The root of it is probably pretty sexist when all is said and done: It just seems sort of unfeminine, and these girls should be priming themselves to have precious babies, not priming cartridges on a loading press! Since I am an old guy and pretty sexist, I can viscerally appreciate such feelings. Then I have to remind myself that in Greco-Roman antiquity the deity governing the chase was Artemis/Diana--very female and very beautiful.

I think people expect hunting to be a man thing..

Women are still perceived by society as more caring and sensitive .

Also the fact she is very young didn't play in her favour..

I don't believe going on safari is synonymous with a hunting trip.

Back in the days of "old Hollywood" it pretty much was. These days any tourist who takes a bus excursion into a game reserve will tell you he (or she) has been "on safari." That's why I used the term "real safari" in my earlier post.

Safari is now a very different experience of the great adventure it used to be.

You're joking right? Or are you really that ignorant?

Even if you live under a rock and have not been to a movie theater in the past two decades, I'm sure someone at the School of Bigotry taught you something about animals and dinosaurs, about how some of them exist and some of them don't, about some of them being real and some of them not being real, about reading captions before making idiotic comments that will make you look like a fool...

Wow, calling me ignorant and bigoted. That's classy. And are you saying that dinosaurs are imaginary? Because I'm pretty sure you're wrong about that.
