I follow the blue sock only methodology. I do have other pairs, but on a daily basis it is easy to hit the sock draw and pull out the blue pair.

No way. black or charcoal socks would look horrible with tan or brown pants but navy can still work. I can't say I'd like navy socks with olive though, and it wouldn't look good with some browns and tans.

Still, why not just go with a variety of solid colors? It's really not that hard. My pants encompass most of the colors than men wear, from white to tan, to mocha, varying shades of grey and blue, charcoal and olive. I don' thave a huge collection of socks. I have brown, navy, charcoal, black and cream. They go with everything and a selection of solids is better than just going with navy all the time. It's really not difficult to figure out what goes with what.

But the black socks would match all of iammatt's black suits, trousers and shoes ... right?

Agree on black but totally disagree on grey. Grey socks look great with brown or tan pants

He said charcoal, which is closer to black than even a medium grey. I'm wearing a pair of golden tan pants right now and I just don't think charcoal would look very good with them. I guess that's why I'm wearing a pair of brown socks :p

Well, only if they're knee-high. And only if your legs are pastey white.

The majority of my socks are navy. For more adventurous days, I have some argyles and lime greens and red cashmeres...but the navy hosiery sees the most wear.
