I am a college student trying to build a business wardrobe for an internship next semester in D.C. and I need some advice on where to shop. I love Hugo Boss dress shirts when I can find them in my size (15 34) but I can't really afford to spend more than 45$ on them. Where do you recommend I look for these? I managed to snag a couple at the Rack and Off 5th, but where else should I look? Ebay? I chose the Boss over the alternatives because the fabric seems decent to me, they have younger patterns and the cut is very slim with spread collars. I don't really have the time or the money to keep trying until a MTM comes out right. BTW I live in San Diego, but will be in DC on the 18th.

On a related note I managed to find a Boss Black label suit at Saks for 250 this morning!

if you can go to a more premier Macys like the one in South Coast they have a good selection of hugo boss shirts and at many times they do go on some nested sales resulting in HB dress shirts to go down as low as 25 dollars each.

I dont know about your size per se, but I know last time we bought a few there were was a good selection.

I have several HB dress shirts all purchased at $25 and with my wife's employee discount I do believe these are a great value out there.

correction: the $25 total sale per shirt was AFTER the employee discount , excuse me.

so the price paid at the register was around 31.25 , still a great buy.

Filene's Basement 29.99 all day long. I bought Baldessarinni shirts and I don't think they are better than my H&M shirts. Actually I prefer patterns and cotton thickness of H&M.

Baldessarini is their mid-range line isn't it? The black label selection is their high end, I have a sportcoat in the black label selection that is very nice, but my shirts are in just the black label. I have a HB shirt that I got at Men's Macy's that I like a lot and paid full price for, fits like a glove, but I bought one last month at Nordy Rack for cheap, and the sizing was way off. I like the H&M shirts too but they didn't fit me when I tried them on. Zara's seems to have some really nice dress shirts that rival HB, I haven't tried them on yet though, I'll have to remedy that.

Too bad their aren't any FB's in CA.

Baldessarini was their highest-end line, which has now been replaced with Boss Selection.

Black Label is the main, with red and orange labels producing sportier/casual items at around the same price as the black label and sometimes above, and with the quality being the same or lower than the BL.

I've purchased several Hugo Boss shirts over that past few years. I like them, but they do vary in quality. The Black Label being their top line, the Red, I think is the more trendy, and the green is their sports wear. Some of their shirts are actually quite plain, I avoid those. I prefer their shirts that are made in Italy, however some of the others made in Romania, etc.. are sometimes also decent. My advice: Also go for the black label first & check if it's made in Italy.

Hugo Boss actually can be found for greatly reduced prices on ebay, for new & slightly used shirts. I would go in this direction if you want to build up a decent collection on a budget. I've purchase $200+ shirts for as low as $25. Just always take a daily look & over a bit of time, you can aquire lots..

You should also look into some other brands, like John Varvatos, Borelli, Canali, etc.. there are also good deals on those on ebay.

Just my thoughts

I am very much looking forward to going to Filene's Basement when I get to the East Coast. I was thinking about making a road trip up to L.A. to check out Zara and H&M before I go, as we have neither in SD. Being built like a scarecrow, I was hoping some of their slim stuff might actually fit me.

Also what are the best ways to avoid getting scammed on shirts on Ebay? Just the standard feedback + being in the US or UK, or are there specific rackets to look out for?

Feedback mostly, also check what kind of payments they accept. Most take paypal. I've purchased about 50 items or so & have had great transactions.

As long as they include the measurements (width/lenght/sleeve length) I can usually go of that & get a decent indication of the size.

+1. Vman is correct. Baldessarini was significantly better than the standard production black label and ceased production 2-3 years ago. Their suitings were on par with Castagnia and probably closer to Belvest in quality with a full cut for the American market. The shirtings were manufactured in Switzerland, and made to the standards of the late model Napoli Couture (not XXX) Zegna shirts. Nice, thick, MOP buttons were the norm, a trim fit body, and above average fabrics. The newer, Boss Selection shirts, are manufactured in Romania using decent fabrics and nice MOP buttons without pattern matching or ANY appreciable handwork. At full retail ($225-275) they are a complete ripoff, but Im quite happy with my $30 FB purchases. I would have bought more if they were available.

For the original poster, Boss shirts can be readily found for around $30ish at the end of the season Last Call and Final Act sales for NM and SFA respectively.

Wonder why they went downhill. I think my Boss Selection sportcoat is made in Turkey. For the $200 I paid at Nordy Rack I'm quite happy with it. When are these Neiman and Saks sales typically? end of January?

Baldessarini has not ceased production, but the baldessarini brand was sold-out in august 2006 and afaik the current SS07 collection is still made for hb.

I snagged two Baldessarini shirts for $30 at that FB sale a couple weeks back. My best shirt purchases ever and I wish I bought more but there weren't many in my size. They fit me absolutely perfectly and
I plan on having them copied.

make sure there is a close-up shot of the label, so you can tell the finer details (where it's made and, in the case of Boss, the label color)

I've found feedback to be fairly worthless in avoiding counterfeit goods. The best way to avoid it is to buy high quality brands that are relatively unknown. For instance, I don't think anyone is bothering to counterfeit Canali dress shirts.

Also avoid sellers who have official looking wrappers and plastic bags with the logo. Some of the cheesier counterfeiters think that adds credibility.

I also usually avoid a seller who has every size and style available. That seems very unlikely if it is liquidated genuine merchandise. You would expect limited size availability and perhaps some less popular colors, patterns or styles, for example, lots of pink or lavender shirts. Also beware of any seller with leftover NWT charcoal or navy suits--they are very scarce.

You may also use the search function on this site to find an old thread on sites that are known by forumites to be reputable sellers.

Good luck.
