Hello menswear gurus,
I became a member and chose the username "LadyinDespair" because when it comes to men's fashion, that's exactly how I feel. After reading a few other threads, though, I have faith that you all will be able to help point me in the right direction.
I am helping my fiancé find a summer suit or sports coat for our wedding this July, as he has a tough time finding formalwear for his body type: 6’2 with a very broad "swimmer's chest." He is a size 48 jacket and 34x34 pants.
At first I didn’t understand his discouragement as he is in great shape and I assumed it would be easy to find something which would highlight this. However, I soon realized his predicament during a tedious shopping trip as most jackets seemed tailored to fit either very narrow body types or very round. Whatever would fit him the shoulders and chest was extremely baggy everywhere else. Alternatively, what would fit him properly in the waist was straining to cover his upper torso even when unbuttoned. I understand the benefits of tailoring, but the fit was so terrible it was impossible to get any idea of what an end result would even be with these. Then we went to Hugo Boss. Their cuts were slimming while still showing off his masculine frame. However, the size 46 was just a tad snug. The store had one jacket in a 48, which seemed the right fit but was the wrong style. I’ve since found that tracking down anything specific through them in a size 48 is very difficult, but I’m not even entirely sure that I want to as it could easily cost $600+ for a jacket that might not even be quite what we want. We live in a rural area for our work and it is very difficult to make trips to try on clothes. It is almost tempting just to fork out the money for whatever 48 Hugo Boss can provide, but what I am hoping is that some of you might have suggestions of slightly less expensive alternatives with similar fits that come in his size. I would like to stay under $400 for a coat or $500 for a suit. We will probably have to order online, and so a good website and return policy is important. We would like something in gray. I’m thinking lightweight wool (any suggestions?) as something breathable, cool, and moisture absorbing—as well as structured and seasonally versatile—would be ideal. Unlined or quarter lined, perhaps? So, do any of you know of a company with modern, slimming suits for a reasonable price that will fit broad shouldered gents?
I really appreciate your input as I have felt completely out of my element and directionless in my searches!
