6 1/2 miles at a relatively slow pace. Training for another marathon and getting ready to follow that 18 week cycle!

4 miles today. My left knee is starting to give me problems and with 6 weeks out from my first marathon. I'm struggling with cutting back on my running to let it heal, but still wanting to improve my conditioning and pace

This is far off of my high school cross country days, but I didn't think I could get that fast that quickly. Running, ftw!

Dawg, you ran HS CC????? What were your times?

quevola,

One thing that worked really well for me when I was having knee issues was a foam roller. When I started having problems, I just foam rolled the **** out of my legs and back twice a day (morning and evening). It hurt like a *****, especially around the IT band area, but the inflammation significantly decrease.

Another thing that I did was ice baths. Any run longer than 12 miles, I would just dump ice in a tub afterwards and lay in it for 10-20 minutes. Worked wonders for soreness the next day.

You're just about to hit the really super long runs (the 20 milers). Don't skip those, even if your leg is hurting! Much better to take off 2 - 3 days during the week, and stick to the long runs on the weekends.

Hope you feel better dude!

Nothing spectacular, IIRC my best miler was under 5:30 and a typical 5K was in the low 18:ish. I did it mainly to train for my real sport in the winter--wrestling. We had this kid from Kenya (or some other sub-Saharan country) who ran like a machine. He'd do sub-5:00 all day long, without breaking a sweat. I think I saw him do a 4:15 miler at some point. Nobody could catch up to him. I wonder what happened to that kid now.

Thanks for the good advice and words of encouragement - I'll give the foam roller and ice baths a try.

Those Kenyans are fast. We didn't get to run against many Kenyans in Indiana. CC was awesome though, I loved every minute of it. My best ever was 16:30, so it was pretty good but nothing spectacular. My senior year, my best friend ran a 15:51. ******* insane!

I think the worst part of high school for me was transferring between CC and basketball. The first two weeks were such a *****. I'd be in great conditioned shape from CC, but going from "runner shape" to "basketball shape" was a rough two weeks.

Excellent! Sounds like you should be fine for the marathon.

Have you been testing out any gels or other on-the-run supplements during your long runs?

Thanks T - I've been using GU (chocolate) every 6 miles or so and Accelerade ~ 4oz every 30 minutes I run. It seems to give me a little boost.
