How essential are transcripts in your first job after college?

Lolwut? He's the guy that chose to get a house, propose to his gf/fiancee, get 3 dogs. There are no "extenuating personal circumstances". There is "he made decisions and couldn't see all of them through and went way in over his head".

My transcript (and college experience) was similar, but with a much worse GPA - 2.8gpa. Not a single employer has ever asked for my transcripts; and I went on to get several graduate degrees, which they've never asked for proof of.

Nobody in business has ever examined my transcripts. I think when I was applying for an internship (at a job which I did not end up working for professionally) they may have looked at them briefly, but that was it.

I was asked for mine to verify GPA, degrees earned, and CPA eligibility.

The best jobs will often not require transcripts since the people hiring you will be savvy enough to judge your abilities without relying on such a crude measure to estimate your potential contribution to the company. I have actually never had show my university transcripts or even reveal my GPA to any employer, even with larger companies.

But I if you're going for an entry level job in some huge company, they may insist on seeing this as a matter of policy. I have observed this process before and often having the ultimate GPA will be of no benefit-- a 3.5 vs. 4.0 will be treated the same. But what will matter is that you're above a threshold they have in mind. For example, I've seen places where they only choose to interview those with GPA 3.5 and above. All the other resumes were discarded.

Additionally, sometimes a perfect 4.0 would cause the decision makers to doubt the applicant would be a good employee since it looks like you were a book worm who likely will not fit into the corporate culture. Often having around a 3.8 would be better-- makes you look like a hard worker, but not someone who's the "perfect" little academic.
