Nice look. A grey tie would be a good idea, were it not for the gingham shirt. Though unlike Stitchy I like wearing gingham shirts with ties, in this case it won't work because the contrast navy/white is too stark and will overwhelm any tie. Besides, from a distant it will resolve in a greyish blue, too close to your tie.
If you do insist on wearing a tie, I'd try to introduce another colour like forest green (or perhaps even burgundy though that may clash with the brown). My 2cents...
I would have told him to just wear a navy tie (I did that a while back below) but the brown pants throws a curveball. So I'd just go tieless

Today's attire reflects the fact that it's warm and humid here in NYC - time for seersucker.

I love the seersucker Crusty, but I feel there's not enough contrast here. The cream square fades with the cream of the seersucker and the buttons. The blue shirt blends with the blue of the seersucker. I imagine it all looks very monochrome from a distance. Love the shoes by the way.

He should try a pink shirt and I can remember, that he promised that some time ago.

I had not planned on posting this fit, but since it pertains to yesterday's conversation I thought I would. I was originally wearing a forest green grenadine tie with this, but I removed it, because as a Elio said, it was just too overwhelming with the dark gingham check.

Question:
I'm really liking this look and have a jacket, pants, and a shirt which look almost exactly like this. I'd like to wear a tie with this as well. What would you see as a better match - brown grenadine or a grey (light or dark)? I'm having a hard time deciding and don't have a grey tie to compare it with (but I do have brown). I'm concerned that the brown adds too much brown to the overall look. I'd be wearing it as a part-time college professor in the fall. Thoughts?
Another option, in addition to those already shared, is dark navy knit (silk or wool, but wool is probably better), assuming you can go dark enough to contrast with the jacket. Of course, brown knit would work as well. -- Still on the road, and still relegated to handheld mirror shots with terrible lighting.

Looking good, my friend. Out of curiosity, did you take a pic with the tie?
