IMO, the best salespeople actually like and believe in the product that they sell. They shouldn't mind.

I have yet to work in clothing sales, but I have worked in a commissioned sales position. I always tried to give the best answer possible to help the customer, even when I could tell they were only there to get information then buy somewhere else. Some customers were upfront and let me know that they were not ready to buy that day. It is frustrating to have a customer walk out without buying after having given them an hour of your time, but that's part of the business.

Now everytime I know that I am shopping somewhere that sales people work off commission and don't plan on buying that day, I either let them know I am browsing or ask for a card and return to them. Unless, of course, they are rude. There is no reason to be rude in that position.

I sell shoes, and I don't mind at all telling a customer about the different products we carry and the differences between each shoe regardless if they are buying or not. Since I work in a smaller store, most of my good customers end up special ordering things that take 3-4 weeks to get in, so I'm fairly used to the "investment" customer idea. The only time it's annoying is when we're noticeably busy i.e - I already am helping 3 or 4 customers at the moment. But for the most part, I am passionate about what I sell, so I am enthusiastic when someone takes the time to ask good questions and listens to my input.

But from a different perspective, if I go into another store and don't intend to buy I never bother the sales person. I'm not really sure why, I just don't. I figure I can do the research on my own if I have to. But the only store I have ever had a problem talking to a sales person is Neimans, maybe it's my young age? They always seem irritated when I walk through.
