Durable Pants Fabric for Unbearable Summers

Hi Everyone,

Living in Cairo, yet having failed evolutions test at coping with summers, I am in the search for a fabric that is durable like jeans yet breezy. I'm in the process of building a wardrobe consisting of pieces that I will wear as a uniform. My plan is to buy multiples of the same pair of pants in the same colour, fabric and cut and wear them throughout the summer season. As such, I can be to be fussy about exactly what I want.

I'll have experimented with the following and failed at them all:
-Jeans: Most durable but retains heat and is unbearable
-Chinos: I've tried H&M standard cotton chinos but not happy with the result. Still too hot.
-Linen: Living in Cairo means things get dirty really fast. Linen can't be washed frequently and is expensive to maintain.
-Shorts: Cairo is conservative. Shorts are frowned upon. There are many occasions where they are inappropriate. At best, I can wear shorts when holidaying. But for running around the city, they are impractical.

So I'm looking for suggestions for fabrics that are durable yet breezy for the summers. Something for relaxing with friends, running errands, slightly dressed up in a unstructured jacket and something that would not turn heads. I have thought of seersucker in a navy 5-pocket slim cut but I have never worn seersucker and don't know where I can find such a design.

I have lived in places where summer is blazing hot as well, and the only thing I can recommend you is either light cotton (chino style but the lightests cotton you can find) or a combination of linen and cotton, maybe 45% linen, 55% cotton.

Appreciate the response. Any idea how do these hold up after multiple wears? Also, any experience as to where I can get a decent ones that will hold up and are easy on the wallet.

I dont spend too much on pants, and I tend to buy from Spanish brands. The fashion industry is huge in Spain. Last year I bought very nice thick linen pants from Adolfo Domínguez (in spanish it would say "lino grueso" = thick linen). It is the only item I have from this brand because I dont like its quality for tops and other items, but this particular trouser has thicker linen that does not wrinkle so easily and it is a very nice and straight pant.

Roberto Verino is another Spanish brand with good quality and mixes of silk and cotton or linen and cotton.

Good quality pants in medium gray that have cotton and at least 25-30% linen should be fine and it would probably be the best option in terms of comfort for the summer plus a certain resistance to dirt (due to the medium gray color or maybe khaki, or a beige).. due to the cotton percentage they dont wrinkle so much either.

Basically you have to strike a balance between comfort and formality. The more formal your workplace, the harder it might be to find appropiate clothes for the summer; there are nice suits in nice cloths that are light etc but they will all wrinkle even a bit, but if you dress more informally combinations of good quality cotton, linen and silk will work for you; there are more dressy and more informal kinds of pants and also jackets in those materials, and even if you had to eventually wear a tie it could still work fine and look nice.

Thanks Lucasfilms, I went through the brands you mentioned online but unfortunately they aren't in Egypt. However, I will look up pants in the cotton, linen, and silk combo you mentioned.

Curious if anyone else has experimented with other fabrics as well?

Aside from cotton-linen, there is cotton poplin, which is not the most breathable form of cotton but it's still relatively lightweight and durable. A varied hot-climate wardrobe probably should include both.
