Does it make more sense to have better shoes or suits?

Definitely good looking suits. Good fitting suits will make you really stand out. Take a look at at this picture of the Rubinacci. The first thing you'll notice is how well his suit looked and fit, even though his shoes were very casual. As a matter of fact, when I first saw this picture, I didn't even notice that they were not wearing any socks! http://www.thesartorialist.com/photo...LR_5245Web.jpg

I say suits, people are looking at you more then they are your feet and are quicker to notice a ill fitted or cheap quality suit before they will notice a bad pair of shoes.

When I wear nice shoes whether with a suit or just a nice jeans I seemto get the compliment on the shoes, not the suit or jeans. Even with no socks

It is like being a **** man or an arse man...

We can discuss ad vitam aeternam the merits of both and never find a definitive answer to this important sartorial question...

Out of all of the B.S. posted in this thread this one bothers me the most. Why is it that I think Rubanacci suits look better on Mafoofan than they do on the Rubanacci's themselves? It always looks like the shoulders are too big on their jackets. Besides that the next thing I saw was belgian shoes, which in my opinion are always a fail unless they are worn in one's own home.

Is it just me, or did you go from a 47 year old Financial Planner to a 24 year old working at his father's company? Just sayin.

I love nice shoes, so I would have to say them. Of course I am the type of guy who has no issue pairing expensive Italian shoes with slim Gap chinos and a JCrew shirt.

The first thing I noticed were those terrible shoes (actually I might have noticed the bald spot and 5 day stubble on the young one first).

That's the point of this thread. The first thing you noticed is the suit not the shoes. Whether you like the suit or not is your own opinion.

But the point of this thread is not what you personally notice first on a person it is about the relative qualities of the ranges of suits and shoes.

If I interpet the visual advertisements on Ask Andy About Clothes even somewhat accurately, it pretty obvious that a clothing budget should go to Zimmerli underwear first.

I would start with the briefs that go up to one's armpits.

Shoes.

If suits are sex then shoes are the orgasm.

That's signature material right there, baby!

Some gents here oversimplify the problem, when talking about "terrible shoes" with decent suits, or vice versa. Of course, you'll look awful if you pair $40 shoes with your Kiton suit.

The actual question would be something like : $500 shoes with $1500 suits, or $500 suits with $1500 shoes? Weston shoes + Corneliani suit, or John Lobb Prestige shoes + Brooks Brothers suit?

The first choice sounds better to me. But shoes can't be tailored for a better fit.

Shoes are the only thing I would spend money on in the near future. I already have a decent belt, wallet and watch. I'm considering purchasing a pair of loafers from EG or Lobb in the next two years (yes, big timer LOL).

W.r.t suits, I had four pairs of pants made up in Navy and Grey (2 of each). I plan to have a nice navy jacket made, so i can wear it with the matching pants and mix it up with the grey when I feel need for a change.

I'm pretty simple when it comes to suits. The small things make all the difference...

Oh yeah, it helps to have a good frame... even the most lowly of suits will make you look like an Adonis if you have the body.
