Dive bars in NYC

I've been in NYC for about three months now, and while I've been finding all sorts of cool bars, I'm curious about other people's picks. I prefer dive bars: the atmosphere's laid-back; the juke box plays VU and the Clash; the drinks are on the cheap side; American jackasses and uptight B&T blondes (fake and otherwise) need not apply.

Anyone know of good bars that fit the bill?

I could name 15 others without thinking too hard. Depends on your neighborhood and exactly what you mean by a dive. Cheap-drinks dive or genuinely-afraid-for-your-safety dive? I like both. Mike C. - I'd also be interested in your list.

Manhattan:
The Subway Inn, across the street from the Bloomingdale's loading dock. I haven't been up here in a while, but I'm sure it's still a dark and sticky hole.
Joe's Bar, E6th between A and B. Cheap beer, a pool table, and a great classic country jukebox.
The Blue and Gold, E7th between 1 and 2. I know I've been here a number of times, but I'm damned if I can remember those nights.

Brooklyn:
The Turkey's Nest, Bedford and N12th. Dirty and smokey and getting trendy. Great staff.
Greenpoint Tavern, Bedford between N6th and N7th. The beer is measured in quarts.

Totally off topic: I once spent an afternoon in Helsinki with a buddy, walking around in -20C trying to find a bar he had liked five years previously. It had a boxing ring in the middle and topless women wrestling in it. It was a worthy mission regardless of the cold, but eventually we found out it had been closed for a few years. Tough luck...

I haven't lived in NYC for over two years but some of these were still there when i visited last December. Some have been around forever so are probably still there.

Bar 81 (7th st @ 2/3) - solid jukebox for an old Ukrainian joint, pool table.

The Blarney Cove (14th st @ 1/A) - G&R on the jukebox, amusing drunks, perpetually stuck in "renovation".

Welcome to the Johnson's (essex st?) - decked out like a suburban basement, PBR for a buck, NYU cheeseballs galore.

Jimmy's (off of Times Square E of Broadway, south side) - boxing theme.

The International (2nd ave @ 7/8?) - cheap booze, some decent whiskies.

In a little late here, but I can also vouch for the Subway Inn. Mario, the bartender, is a very cool guy.

If you are hardcore, check out Bellevue Bar (9th and 39th). Pretty much a heavy/speed metal bar. Cheap, cheap drinks. PBR in the can (more than one place in the city sells PBR in cans, its NYC after all).
