I am not an aficionado of Dim Sum, not even of Chinese food.
However, some friends are visiting from LA and they want to
go out from Dim Dum tomorrow. They are sophisticated diners

Suggestions?

Thanks.

I would bring them to either Koi Palace or R&G Lounge. Koi Palace is actually in Daly City, but I prefer it to R&G. Koi Palace is noisy as ****.

Make reservations as soon as possible or be prepared for a long wait.

Agree with this. Koi Palace is generally considered better than anything in the city (on Chowhound, at any rate) and R&G is also very good, especially their salt and pepper crab (not dim sum, obviously). Food snobs sneer at Yank Sing as gringo style, but the food is good quality (Stevenson St. is better than Rincon, IMO). Ton Kiang is also a good option, on Geary in the Richmond.

I'd go Ton Kiang over any of the rest. Koi Palace is alright and all but liking it the best is kind of an Asian thing. And the setting is bloody well dismal.

The head chef of R&G left a while back and is now at Hong Kong Flower in Millbrae. R&G's food is still good but imo a few of their more famous dishes ie. salt and pepper crab has dropped a bit in taste.

Koi Palace is good and has a ton of variety, but as mentioned above, make a reservation or be prepared for a 20+ minute wait. If you're located in Palo Alto, a closer option is ABC in Foster City. In addition to dim sum, try their roast duck and egg yolk pumpkin crab.

Thanks for the heads up - I haven't been to HKFL in years, I'll have to get it back on the rotation. I've heard good things about ABC as well, and it's close to where I work. I'll definitely look into it!

On a related subject: got any recommendations for Korean tofu places in or near San Mateo?

Yeah give ABC a try sometime. Both their dim sum and dinner are good.

I'm not a huge fan of Korean tofu so I wouldn't know whats good or bad but my parents and friends all like Todam Tofu House in San Bruno. (http://www.yelp.com/biz/todam-tofu-house-san-bruno) It's run by a Korean family and gets good business so I'd guess it's pretty good.

I'll second Ton Kiang (on Geary between 22nd and 23rd) . Martha Stewart did is segment on it on her old show (before prison). She said SF is the best place for Dim Sum outside of the Orient and Ton Kiang is the best place for Dim Sum in SF. I am not a big fan of Chinese food in general, but we always go there when my family visits. Most of my Chinese friends like it.

I'm a fan of Mayflower on Geary.
