My first post in the forum, outside of "introduce yourself" - I feel I have something to contribute to this particular thread.

I just recently got into boots a little bit, and, after some research (including here) and looking at sales around the web, decided to pull the trigger on 2 pairs. 1st is Normandy from Allen Edmonds, and second - Masham R from Cheaney (12508 last). When deciding on the sizing for Cheaney (mistake would be relatively costly, considering return shipping to UK), I used info found here, which pretty much said that, if you know your US size for AE shoes, you have to take straight 1 size down for Cheaney.

I'm happy to confirm that it is really the case, at least for these 2 particular boots (see the last picture below) - 11D in AE and 10F in Cheaney. As far as quality - I feel that Cheaney is a clear step up from AE, with regards to attention to details, first and foremost. However, AE's leather, while not of higher quality, is significantly softer.

Thank you for this, it is really helpful!

Jarrow in waxy commander suede. This is my first pair of Cheaneys and this suede is supposed to be rugged, but these are unworn. Pretty high amount of roughing up done for me! Anyone else have issues out of the box with Cheaneys or maybe they just have a high tolerance for this material? Despite the big scratches it looks nice and I don't plan on returning.

I have a pair of Trickers Stow in a similar leather and it also showed some scratches when new. They will become less noticeable with wear. And a good brush up also helps.

Hello, I need help from an experienced user. I'm thinking about buying a pair of shoes from Cheaney's, I may choose between an Alfred capped oxford in Mocha Calf Leather and a Lime classic oxford in black calf leather with leather sole. Personally I like both. I've noticed the Alfred is more expensive so I'd be thankful if anyone explained why. Both are size 12F, outsole length is 34 cm for both shoes, and the width is 11.4 for the Alfred and 12 for the lime. Now my feet measure 29 cm length and 11 cm width, and my instep measures 26,5 cm. Do you think either of these would fit me? Thank you.

Hello, I own a pair of Cheaney Alfred and the quality is great, the toe box is quiet rounded but in large sizes (I am 10.5) I believe it lookes better because slimmer shoes tend to be larger. Anyway Cheaney are great shoes.

The Alfred leather is from a younger calf so the leather is of a higher quality. It should be softer and the pores tighter. It's on a traditional round toed last.

The Lime is part of their entry level and the leather is from an older animal and it has slightly thinner uppers and sole. It's on an almond toed last.

This accounts for the difference in price.

If price isnt that much of an issue you should definitely go for the Alfred. Leather and finishing is on a higher level. And the 125 last is a classic, timeless last.

So you think it will be a good fit? I'm a bit concerned about the length of the shoe. Thanks for the help, thanks everyone actually.

Cheaney ended up replacing these, not because of the scuffs but there was also a crack in one of the boots. The replacements were not just scuff and crack free, but better all around - stitching, cleaner cuts, everything. Almost like it was made by a different company. Going to chalk the first pair up as an anomaly.

I've gotten a few wears in and love these boots. The Stead suede has a nice look and feel. Though I will probably go a 1/2 size smaller next time.
