Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I got a couple of pairs last week. I'm normally a 12D and when I tried on the 12F it felt quite large. I was getting paranoid that it was a UK 12 (aka a US 13) but I think it's mostly that the lasts seem to be fairly wide and generous. If you are normally an ee/eee and can wear the F last that makes sense.

It took me a few days going back and forth on returning them for an 11.5F but, wearing them at work today, I am glad I didn't. They feel great I just needed to get used to having more room in the forefoot.

12F is close to 12ee/12eee depending on the last.

I'm in the 11028 and the 2003 lasts, the latter doesn't appear on the Cheaney website. I have to say my feet don't measure as wide but all my other shoes feel too narrow now.

Do you have any of Cheaney's own shoes? Curious if you go down a half or full size vs the Dack shoes.

I do own 3 pairs of Cheaney boots:

Trafalgar in 8.5F (12508 Last)
Orwell B in 8.5F (12508 last)
Pennine II in 8.5G (4436 last)

All of the above fit similarly. Feet are generally snug with thin socks, but some wiggle room for my toes which I like.

If I took Cheaneys advice (their website and e-mailing them), I would have bought 7.5F or 7.5G. I can say there is no way my feet would fit into those sizes. Maybe 8H if the last is really wide.

I've been measured by a local Canadian stockist who is well versed with English brands (it's all he sells). And he says I'm generally 8.5F for most English brands, because their lasts are generally slimmer and finer than North American lasts, especially the American ones.

I have the Pennine. It was stocked by Marks and Spencer briefly as part of their ‘Best of British’ range. It went on sale at half price so I bought it without trying it on because I wanted another Veldtschoen.

The laces supplied are not long enough for a nine hole boot to be easily untied or put on without removing from the upper holes. Nine holes are close together so a straight lace style set up is very cramped anyway.

My laces are close together at the bottom and then bow out in the middle similar to your Trafalgar boots. I switched to an Army lacing pattern to address lace congestion and I now use lock laces for convenience when putting on and removing the boot.

A seven hole Veldtschoen boot with a more generous upper would suit me better. Veldtschoen shoes are a much easier option to buy.

You can always have some speed hooks added:

I read somewhere that Cheaney changed the coloration of ‘Dark Leaf’ to a richer darker shade. Is that true? When did the change occur?

Yes, they did a few years ago (Pre COVID). The first iterations were a bit light and dull. The latest batches have better burnish and a richer, deeper colour.

I don’t like speedhooks except on dedicated walking boots. Hoggs of Fife have a Veldtschoen boot with speedhooks:-
Great boot if perhaps on the heavy side, built like tanks. Got mine for £210 mid 2020 and was shocked at the price of them now when I clicked on the link.
