Hi Guys

Can anyone advise if Canali suits with 3 buttons are typically 3 roll 2 or hard 3?

I'm seriously considering this suit on eBay and asked the seller about the 3 buttons. The suit looks 3 roll 2 to me but he's stated its a 3 button suit. Happy to buy if it's the former but not the latter.

Any thoughts or experiences?

Cheers.

Canali makes a wide range of models so I'd say there is no "typical". I've seen 3r2, 3r2.5, and hard 3. That being said, it certainly does not look like a hard 3.

This looks like a 3 roll 2.

I’m pretty sure it’s a hard 3 presented to look like a 3R2. The creasing along the lapel indicates that it isn’t consructed to roll and has been ‘forced’ a little. Some hard 3 jackets tend to roll a little naturally while others never seem to even after much wear.

I know what you are referring to but I am not seeing evidence of a hard 3 lapel line myself. In the fifth picture (closeup of the bottom of the lapel line) the lapel seems to roll smoothly to the middle button. If this were a hard 3 pressed to look like a 3r2 I would expect a crease at the bottom of the lapel line, not a roll.

You could be right, yes. However my guess is that the hard 3 lapel crease has been pressed out and it has been ‘encouraged’ to roll to the next button but not pressed too firmly, thus creating the rather odd concave/‘negative belly’ shape. I suspect this based only on my largely failed attempts to do similar to old hard 3 jackets although, as I said earlier, it works better on some garments than others.

So the easiest way (IMO) to differentiate between a 3-roll-2 and a 3-roll-2.5 is to look at the buttonhole. The inward facing side of buttonhole should be as neat as the outward facing side of the two bottom buttonholes - i.e they should be identical. That indicates that the upper buttonhole was made to be seen - as it rolls with the lapel - and is more presentable.

On a 3-roll-2, the upper buttonhole tends to look rougher. Kinda like the backside of the two lower buttonholes. But since the canvas has not been cut or sewn in the "hard" way, the lapel still has a nice roll to it.

A hard 3 button is easier to spot, as the lapel starts to roll above the upper button.

edit: As for this Canali suit - I think it's a 3-roll-2.5

Keep in mind that some sellers on Ebay tend to play safe to avoid "Not As Described" returns. Does it have 3 buttons? Yes. You can't dispute that.
But the way, seller is an affiliate here, @sartoriale , so go ahead and ask.

Actually, it is a true 3 button suit, not 3 roll to 2...
