I saw this April, 2007, post on Steve McQueen Online which has been edited for the sake of brevity (the McQueen poster was offering one on eBay):

_________________________________________________________________
Baracuta G9 Japan-only Vintage line, Steve McQueen.

Features include: Vintage zips

Scalloped pockets
Slim vintage fit

If, like me, you love the vintage style of the G9, but do not like the baggy, ill-fitting modern examples that currently pass themselves off as Baracutas, then this is for you.

This jacket comes in natural (which is now sold out). This jacket was made famous by Steve Mcqueen, but has also been worn by the likes of the Clash.

For more pictures, see: http://www.rakuten.co.jp/littletreasure ... 53/760190/

Are the current examples "baggy" and ill-fitting?

The largest size I currently see being offered on the Rakuten site is 42 and I'm at least a 46.

I do, however, see vintage ones being offered on eBay, most commonly from the 80s which say "Baracuta by Van Heusen" inside.

If as I do want the scalloped pockets, etc. of the Vintage line in my size, will one from the 80s encompass my requirements or from what decade of manufacture should I be looking instead?

Thanks for the reply.

It was good, but you were correct: its not exactly the one for which I was looking.

Are there differences between the Baracuta jackets from previous decades vs. their current line?

Were they at one time manufactured by the well-known McGregor and are they less "baggy" and "ill-fitting" as the McQueen poster suggests?

Van Heusen licensed the design from Baracuta, and produced jackets of a distinctly inferior cotton-polyester blend, with skimpy sizing. I know this because I bought a Van Heusen model on eBay before springing for a genuine G9 from O'Connell's in Buffalo, NY. I returned the Van Heusen because (luckily, as it turned out) there were tears in the lining that the seller hadn't noticed.

The genuine G9 is much more satisfying to wear, the sizes are true, and I love mine. The fall of the dollar against European currencies has made it expensive but I still think it's worth the money.

I happened to watch the original (McQueen) version of The Thomas Crown Affair shortly after getting my jacket, and was happy to see Steve climb out of a glider wearing a G9!

What is their Japan-only limited edition vintage line and how does it differ from the jackets currently to be found on their website as well as those being offered by Ben Silver and McConnell's?
