How about these shoes with jeans or chinos. They are Johnson Murphy leather with a rubber sole. I do a lot of walking in my day so I'm concerned about my feet on non rubber soles. What's your take?

If your shoes fit well, leather soles are perfectly safe and comfortable for your feet.

I don't want to deprive you of your martyr complex, but I think the huge square toe, awkward side stitching and cheap perforated leather are all elements generally deemed beyond redemption both individually or in combination.

It's not perfectly fine. It's not OK.

Not here. I was talking about in the regular world. I'm not sure how saying he can wear it in public without going to hell makes me a martyr, either, but ok.

Well, those shoes are certainly immeasurably better. Of course, there are better options, although in that price point (which I guesstimate is between $100 and $200), it is hard to find something more aesthetically pleasing.

And have you tried walking all day in leather-soled shoes? Also, there are many "SF-approved" shoes that have rubber soles.

Which have a vibram sole, and a crepe sole, respectively.

With all this said... J&M (despite the negative press they get on these boards), makes a decent enough shoe in the $75-$150 price range, which is awkward when you do not know your size in some of the less expensive English shoes.

Although I have yet to take the plunge, you may want to check out Meermin--people have good things to say about their shoes.

I really like those suede and leather pairs. Look nice. Would you wear that leather with jeans though?

Yes these j&m were 145 on sale for 116 so I thought even if they lasted a year with daily use I could justify the cost. That's what athletic shoes cost (running shoes) and last before my feet start hurting.

I'm surprised no one has feet issues with wearing leather soled shoes.

Also what is the longevity of suede vs leather. I do a lot of walking in my work day. I really would like to buy some Allen Edmonds, but I can't justify the nice shoes walking on black top and cement.

I certainly have worn them with jeans, but they are usually worn with dark, indigo denim, in a fairly... conservative cut. They can also be worn with cords, chinos, etc.

You know, I only really started wearing suede... maybe 6 years ago? Once you start, you will never go back. It is incredibly durable, it can be worn in rain, shine, whatever. Just need to brush it every once in a while. Very easily cleaned. People tend to worry about "ruining" suede shoes, but I can assure you, they are much hardier than they appear!

And Allen Edmonds are nice, but for the money, you can probably do better. With that said, my first nice shoes were AEs (which I purchased appx. 8-10 years ago), and they still look great. I will snap some pics of them, if you would like, including when I have beat the living hell out of them!

Saw this today at Goodwill and was intrigued. Made in Poland. Super heavy, button-out wool liner. Cotton blend coat, wool collar. I'm no expect, but I didn't think the pattern looked right to be authentic. No tag, just the size, the composition tag and the "made in Poland". Thoughts?

Re: shoes I recommend Loakes. Don't get dress shoes at a lower price point unless emergency. Obv there are other brands at similar or higher points but I would not go lower.

Why do you feel like you need Allen Edmonds shoe polish / shoe brush / shoe trees? They do not "make" any of these items. You would be better off (or at least, in the same position) picking up some woodlore shoe trees and some Saphir shoe polish.

Branded shoe polish is, for the most part, B.S.
