I've never thought of it as a work or productivity tool - I think the work part of it is more a secondary convenience than the main purpose.

For me, it works OK because when I travel, I don't do extensive document creation work but rather receive docs and edit them. It takes me longer than it would on a laptop but I can't be bother lugging a laptop around - the ipad is so light and unintrusive that it never really leaves one of my briefcase's pockets.

That said, just like a vast array of mobile devices and handheld computers, I'm sure that it could be a great productivity tool if an application is specifically designed for the platform.

I got one as a gift from my company this past week. I love mine- for home, I almost feel like I don't need a regular computer. Bear in mind, at home I'm using a computer mainly for surfing and email. This is not to say it doesn't have limitation- I haven't tried the word processing program, but I can already guess at the drawbacks of it, but damn, it is so fun.

That all said, I would personally never plunk down $629 for one, but as a gift the thing is fanfuckingtastic.

Same over here. Every since I got my iPhone 4. I can't downgrade to lower grade displays. LOL

I guess the iPad just doesn't make sense for me or to me.

Overkill is the nature of man - we need a 500hp car to commute to work, we need an AK47 for home defense, and we need a 4Ghz processor and 12GB of RAM to surf the web, watch youtube, and check e-mail. Viewed in that context, the iPad makes no more sense than a Smart Fortwo or a little 22. caliber.

If MS Office ever came out for the iPad, it would kill the netbook.

This thing confuses me so much

If one has a decent notebook, what would be the added value of an Ipad?

I know touch screen laptops have been around for a while, but they were all Windows based. If they could make a version of Windows that could optimize a multitouch screen, an Ipad would be pointless IMO (unless there are some functionalities I'm unaware of).

Go play with one - until then, it's hard to explain it any further than what's in this thread (did you read it?). It's very light, turns on and off instantly, is extremely easy to use, utilizes the 3G network so it's always online, has tons of cool apps including location-based ones, battery never dies. It's a very mobile device, unlike any notebook out there. There's a reason this thing is selling like crazy.

+1 from me +1 from my workmate who has one +1 from my uncle who has one +1 from his wife who wants one +1 from my mum who wants mine Basically everyone I know says it's crap. Then they use it for some minutes and either directly buy one or just want one. It's making everything so much more comfortable, I don't power on my computer at home anymore except for MS Office or gaming. I just can't bother to bring a private notebook to business trips, the company one is heavily locked through VPN + the proxy settings so it's a nobrainer that the iPad comes with me.

I have one, but never use it. Probably in a drawer somewhere in my kitchen lol. Its useful if you dont have an iPhone and aren't really into technology. Its super user-friendly and easy to use. My parents use it on long road trips to look up places to eat (other than what shows up on GPS) or other things along the way.
